The Inception Of ShopCats

The concept took root when Martin\’s wife lived in San Francisco and frequently encountered shop cats near her bus stops on her way to work. Martin, with a touch of romance, pledged to find them all for her. His initial goal for the app was to list 10,000 cats, but the challenge was how to locate them. Martin utilized his technical expertise to create software that scours the internet for business reviews mentioning cats.

He clarified, \”So, let\’s say you went and you had a great breakfast and you wrote a review, \’I had a great breakfast at this place, oh, and they had a cute cat living there.\’ I wrote some software to scrape sites with user reviews.\”

Through machine learning, he determined the probability of a cat\’s presence at a given business. If the probability met a certain threshold, it would automatically be listed in ShopCats. Martin manually reviews places that fall between the automated listing and exclusion thresholds.

ShopCats is loaded with fun features, including a cat map that displays the locations of cats you can visit, making it an ideal tool for cat lovers traveling in need of some feline affection.

You can also search for cats by category, such as bookstores, and by city. The app even features a \”hotspot\” function that identifies areas with multiple cats in close proximity.

When you visit a cat, you can check in and share photos and comments about your visit. The app encourages interaction, and instead of simply liking a cat, ShopCats allows you to virtually give the cat a scratch.

Furthermore, users can earn awards, such as \”Pet Detective\” for discovering a new shop cat, \”Big Fan\” for visiting the same shop cat multiple times, and \”Adventurer\” for visiting cats in three different cities, among others.
